Optimizing the Project Pipeline - What does it Take?

The Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) - Wisconsin Chapter's next meeting/presentation will feature Vineet Dalal from management consultants Pittiglio, Rabin, Todd & McGrath. The topic of this meeting will be the Project Pipeline Management.

"Productivity", as in 'project productivity" is on the short list of key agenda items facing most executives of New Product Development, IT, Engineering, and Supply Chain today. "We'll have to do more with less" is one of the key challenges heard in today's budgeting and planning meetings. To meet this challenge, there are many productivity levers for executives to pull: improving project planning and management skills, improving requirements gathering and management skills, improving data management and IT systems, improving portfolio decision-making, improving project road-mapping, improving functional skills, and many more.

However, one of the hardest levers for organizations to master is management of the project pipeline. Why is it so hard? It's cross-functional. It's quantitative. It requires deep planning skills. It requires aligned commitments. It requires taking positions on schedules and resource needs when scope of work is uncertain and changing. Yet, those firms who master project pipeline management have seen improvements in project throughput and portfolio value creation of 20%-50%.

In this interactive presentation, "Optimizing the Product Pipeline - What Does it Take?" Vineet will discuss how to tie together leadership, organization design, processes, information, and IT applications to create an effective "system" to manage the project pipeline. The presentation will be mix of lecture, a case study, and an exercise covering key aspects of pipeline management:

Portfolio Architecture
Pipeline Management Process
Pipeline Balancing and Debottlenecking
Capacity Management
Project Resource Needs Estimation
Governance
