Wednesday, October 19th, 2005 Strategic Roadmapping Investment decisions impacting an organization’s product and technology portfolios are constantly being made at all levels. Furthermore, each functional area is striving to optimize their portion of the business within an environment containing risk and uncertainty. Alignment between these investments and product line, divisional, and corporate strategies is becoming increasingly complex given today’s fast-paced competitive markets. At Agere Systems, we have deployed Strategic Roadmapping, a portfolio management methodology that directs our current, medium and long-term technology and product portfolio investment decisions. This approach or framework is all about decision-making, gap identification, gap closure, and communications. It links business, product, and technology strategies and enables one to understand, communicate, and control what is known (long and short-term trends), and deal profitably with what is unknown or unclear (chaotic markets, unpredictable customers, swiftly changing architectures, applications, and nimble competitors). This presentation details Agere's Strategic Roadmapping methodology that spans Sales to Supply Chain, and New Product Development to Portfolio Management, and also describes how we are utilizing roadmaps to successfully align product and technology investments to revenue and growth. The talk will highlight the key learnings in the deployment, integration with other business processes, and decision-making at Agere Systems, and show how we are unlocking the value inherent in roadmapping. In particular, topics will include:
Presenter David L. Dreifus, PhD, Corporate Technology and Market Strategy, Agere Systems David Dreifus is part of Agere’s Corporate Strategy team, where he is leading the development and implementation of a linked concurrent business planning and portfolio management process that employs Strategic Roadmapping, Pipelining, and Portfolio Management methodologies. This involves linking business, product, technology, and manufacturing strategies and processes, identifying and framing gaps, and re-deploying resources to maximize profits from technology and infrastructure investments. He is also actively working to coordinate new opportunities, technology development, and networking architectural activities that span multiple business unit areas. Prior to joining Agere, David worked at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, New Jersey as well as at Kobe's Electronic Materials Research Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. David has over 16 years experience in both product and strategy development, and he has been both a developer and instructor of a best-practices course on Roadmapping. He has led and contributed to numerous research and product development efforts for microelectronic, optoelectronic, and wireless applications. David has completed over 45 scientific publications, 3 book chapters, and been awarded 22 patents in these areas. He has also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor for 6 years in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University, and as an officer and Symposium Chairman for the Carolinas Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association. David received a BS degree from Lehigh University, and MS and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University, all in Electrical Engineering. He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Societies, the American Physical Society, and IEEE.
