Panel Discussion: Social Responsibility Doesn’t Mean Not for Profit: Doing Good AND Making Money (Product Management Experience Series)
Today, many companies often confuse results with mission and vision. Successful companies define their purpose for being and where there are going in other ways – and make money doing it. Join us for a thought provoking evening on how you define yourself, strategic choices, and what opportunities exist for product managers in these types of companies. A panel will discuss how success and social responsibility aren’t mutually exclusive. The panel discussion will center on the following:
- Why did you found or join a for-profit company with a social goal? Why not work for a not-for-profit company or do volunteer work on the side?
- Do you find yourself struggling with choices – make more money vs. do more good?
- Can you compete fairly with “normal” companies? Are you at a disadvantage because you aren’t investing as much in the company financially OR at an advantage because you get the “sympathy” sale?
- Do you work harder or easier than your strictly for-profit peers?
- What do you look for when you hire product managers? Is transitioning to the environment more difficult due to the different culture? Do you have to be a vegetarian?

Panel Moderator: Michael Megalli
Michael is a partner at Group 1066. He works with clients to help them find new opportunities for innovating their go-to-market approach. His focus is on technology products and services, and other complex sets of offerings. He brings a range of experience on strategic problem-solving for clients, including: Microsoft, MasterCard, IBM, Gartner, Readers' Digest, Dow Chemical, Caterpillar, and the Boston Consulting Group, among others.
Michael writes and speaks frequently on strategic marketing and product innovation. His articles have appeared in Brandweek, CMO Magazine, ChiefMarketer, and WirelessWeek. He has also been quoted and featured in The New York Times, CNNfn, Paper, Advertising Age, Yahoo! Business News, American Demographics, and Comvergence.
He serves on the Advisory Board of Prisma MicroFinance, a Boston-based microcredit lending institution. Michael has a masters degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University where his thesis was on the impact of broadband wireless technologies. He has a degree in Religious Studies from Brown University.
Josh Dorfman, Founder and CEO, Vivavi
Josh Dorfman is not your typical environmental activist. He believes in creating stylish, innovative, and market-based approaches to environmental challenges that make it easy for everyone to be part of the solution. An environmental entrepreneur, author, speaker, and radio personality, Josh founded Vivavi in 2003 to merge modern style with environmental awareness to provide consumers with outstanding options for furnishing their homes.
David Satterwaite, President and CEO Prisma Microfinance
As Prisma’s co-founder, David has built Prisma’s Nicaraguan business since 1995. David is an experienced entrepreneur applying sound managerial acumen to achieving social and financial returns. For his work with Prisma, David has been recognized with national awards from Fast Company, Hewlitt Packard, the National Social Venture Competition, and the Pegut Sound Business Journal. David is a regular speaker on the topics of commercial microfinance and social enterprise. David graduated with honors from Haverford College with a degree in Political Science. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in “Social Entrepreneurship” at Boston College.
