Innovation and New Product Development in India: Emerging Global
Opportunities

These are exciting times! Global opportunities are emerging even as survival of enterprises is threatened by fierce competition. In India, innovation is a relatively new concern. According to a recent study, R&D in India makes up a mere 0.8 per cent of the GDP. High rates of growth registered so far have been based on competitiveness triggered by cost arbitrage. India attempts to reposition itself from a low cost manufacturer/service provider to a creative and innovative product developer and aims for a growth trajectory engineered by value arbitrage through innovation.

Many companies have long felt that the risks of investing in R&D far outweighed the prospects of phenomenal returns. But some of them have already accepted the reality that survival depends on sustained innovation. Tata Motors has already made the world look at them with their sub $3000 car ‘Nano’. With the growing realization that there is a huge untapped market segment in rural India that promises a big and sustaining fortune at the base of the pyramid….What will it take to create a market out of India’s poor? What would interest a global player to capitalize on these opportunities? How does an emerging economy make the transition from cost arbitrage to innovative product developer? Get answers - Join Prof. K Chandrasekaran for an exciting evening of interactions to gain fresh perspectives on emerging global opportunities.
