July 11, 2007 Interactive Product Management in the Publishing Industry The media industry is undergoing a transformation to becoming truly “multi-platform” — providing information through a variety of media and not tied to any particular form. And where launching traditional print products sometimes took years and consumed millions of dollars (one magazine launch this year is rumored to cost $100 million), the development cycles for interactive products are much shorter, more incremental, and depend on much different technologies. This demands that media companies develop new competencies and sometimes new cultures to ensure success in a Web 2.0 world. We will discuss the product management challenges surrounding this shift, and explore how the new media NPD lifecycle works in several companies.
Presenter Joseph Galarneau– CTO, New York Magazine Joseph Galarneau is chief technology officer at New York Magazine, where he has responsibility for web and mobile product management, software development and operations, and corporate technology. Prior to joining the magazine in 2004, Joe was a senior manager in the media and entertainment practice of BearingPoint (formerly KPMG Consulting), where he led the firm’s efforts in magazines, book publishing, and commercial printing. Among his clients were The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Advance Publications, and Quebecor World, and he also consulted on interactive technologies for JPMorganChase, Philip Morris, and Verizon. Frequently quoted in the press on media technology issues, Joe also has spoken at many industry gatherings, including Folio Magazine, Society for Information Management, and Newspaper Procurement Management Association conferences.
Previously, Joe spent a decade in various management positions with the Knight Ridder and Times Mirror newspaper groups, and started in the media industry as a reporter. He has an MBA from Duke University and received a BS in physics from N.C. State University. A certified Project Management Professional and prospective New Product Development Professional, Joe teaches a course in new media product management at New York University, and in March, under the auspices of the Chinese government’s General Administration for Press and Publications and NYU, he will teach a similar seminar in Beijing for Chinese publishing executives.
