400 Years of Innovation
New England has a rich tradition of innovation that goes back 400 years. Founded as a vision of a society in the New World that differed radically from that in England, the settlers built political and social structures that laid the foundation for the American Revolution. The early settlers implemented a system of public schools that allowed everyone on the colony to get an education. Knowledge and critical thinking were seen as an essential part of this new society. Six years after Boston was first settled, Harvard College was founded. New England has a rich tradition of higher learning, with its universities being the source of many innovative technologies.
Struggling to survive during the early years, the colonists learned to adapt and innovate in order to survive and eventually thrive. They learned to collaborate and exploit the resources they had. Maritime commerce became the main economic activity. New Englanders established trade routes and in less than a hundred years since it founding, Boston became the third largest port in the British Empire. Whether salt cod or shipping ice from New England pond as far as India, New Englanders constantly found new opportunities to exploit its maritime trade network.
Later New England would lead the Industrial Revolution in the United States of America. Modern surgery started in Massachusetts when, in 1846 ether was used for the first time during an operation at Mass General. Massachusetts has continued to be an innovator in the life sciences, and our hospitals are still recognized as some of the pre-eminent medical institutions in the world. Today pharmaceutical companies from all around the world coming to Massachusetts to set up R&D facilities that can leverage the rich tradition of medical innovation in the region.
New England also has a rich tradition of high tech innovation in the region. From Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone to the first computers and the birth of the internet, New England has been at the forefront of innovations in high tech.
This spirit of innovation continues to thrive in New England, and members of the PDMA are working at companies that are creating the innovations of tomorrow.
