WHAT’S IN A NAME?
How to win at the product name game.
On April 17, 2008 at Georgia Tech College of Management, we learned about the naming process Fortune 500 companies use to name products, services, or companies.
As cofounder and naming director of 800 Degrees, an Atlanta-based brand consultancy, Mark Speece cast some light on the steps to take and the obstacles to overcome in the name process. His explanation provided both an insight into “how the big guys do it” and practical, usable information that could make your next naming project a bit less daunting.
Merk Speece's presentation is now available (PDF file).
Mark has managed large-scale naming programs for clients such as Campbell’s, Delphi, DuPont, General Motors, Microsoft, Motorola, Pepsi, Philip Morris, Proctor & Gamble, Samsung, SunTrust, UPS, and Visa. He is also an adjunct instructor at Emory University’s Goizueta School of Business and a guest lecturer at the University of Virginia. His branding insights have been reported by media outlets, including Brandweek, BusinessWeek, CNBC, USA Today, and Automotive News.
Come learn the rules of the name game.

Each year the Georgia PDMA sponsors a competition among universities and colleges in Georgia and surrounding states to foster and recognize outstanding graduate and undergraduate student papers about new product development topics.
During our April 17 chapter meeting, we also saw the undergraduate and graduate winners of the 2008 Student Award program present their top findings.
