Rebels with a Cause: Confederate Motor Company

H. Matthew Chambers
On January 17, 2008 at SCAD, we learned about rebuilding and revolutionizing American design.
Mr. Chambers presentation is now available as a PDF file.
As Founder and Managing Director, Matt Chambers told the story of rebirth and revolution of his company, Confederate Motor Company, as they set out to create innovative motorcycles in 1991, then hurdled the dot-com bust, only to be devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005.
With rugged individualism at the core of his passion, Confederate Motor Company, set out to create machines utilizing a holistic, avant-garde process, celebrating the art of rebellion. After Katrina, Chambers redoubled efforts to make the motorcycles better, reevaluating and reengineering every system and subsystem of the machines. Any idea of costs, whatsoever, was thrown out. Only ideas concerning how to construct the best machines were tolerated. With a team of twelve professionals and Chambers’ sixteen years of hands-on experience with the brand, the Hellcat and Wraith motorcycles are now in full production, and the Renovatio model is on the horizon.
